| ==================================================== Match #2 Report 4-14-2002 Another large group of supporters were on hand for CPCC's second match of the season, which was played on a warm spring Sunday afternoon at McAlpine Greenway Park. They witnessed another stage in the evolution of a team, as CPCC Gold garnered several season firsts: First goal, first victory, and first shutout. Gold dominated play for all but a few stretches of this match, increasing the pressure as the game clock advanced. The defensive back four began to function as a unit. Eddie Benavides started the game in goal, then moved to his usual stopper position for the second half. Jonathan Trent took over keeper duties at the start of the second half. Only when Trent faced a PK in the ~57th minute was the shutout seriously threatened. Noticeable improvement was displayed in the midfield as well, where each player accepted more defensive responsibility while improving the quality of communication. Better spacing and timing of through-balls and runs were the result. Gold forwards seemed to be more aware of the need to create space for teammates, and more early shots were taken. The first goal of the season was a low drive to the far post by first-year forward Cheikh Khaddad, providing Gold with a 1-0 halftime lead. The second half scoring was started by a clever header by Alex Tariah from a cross by Neil Van Dyke at the 48th minute. The goal came during a period in which Gold had several prolonged possessions in the Mambo Kings defending third. The third and final score was set up by a nicely played ball by Juan Cevallos down the left side, where it was collected and delivered it across the box to a waiting trio of Gold players virtually escorted it into the goal. Congratulations on a satisfying win which provided a glimpse of what this team can accomplish! ==================================================== Starters Also Playing
