SPRING 2002 REVIEW |

| ==================================================== Match #8 Report 6-2-2002 The RIVALS brought superior touch and endurance to the regular season finale for both teams, downing GOLD 2-0. In the process, the RIVALS almost certainly denied GOLD their first regular season championship. Sunday's match was played on what was to officially become the hottest day since 8-28-2001. Starting strikers Alex Tariah and Cheikh Khaddad were unavailable, as was defender Adam Couch. As a result, several players were asked to perform in unfamiliar roles. The match began with neither side gaining any real advantage, but the deadlock was broken in the 20th minute when Jason Murphy's foul in the box presented a PK opportunity to the RIVALS. It was converted into an advantage the RIVALS would take into halftime. The second half saw the RIVALS maintain its control with superior possessions and an increasing number of well-timed long balls over or through the GOLD midfield. The GOLD attack became less coordinated, producing a mere five bona fide shots on goal. CPCC's attempts at long balls were vacuumed up by the RIVALS rear defense and keeper. Only some masterful saves by Jonathan Trent kept the RIVALS within reach for the first 20 minutes of the second half. With increasing poise and accurate passes, the RIVALS were able to keep up the pressure even as CPCC pressed forward in an attempt to score. There was no lack of individual effort on the part of CPCC in this match, but the shutout was a reminder that individual effort in this sport is not enough for team success. It also constitutes a tremendous challenge to the confidence and solidarity of this team. The tournament awaits. ==================================================== Starters
